Out of the Waiting Place & into the Fray: Let's Fly Free
In my signature LIFE Path journey, the daily Lifeseed that encourages us to "Move to the Music of the Questions" advises us to "Stop waiting for the answer. Stop looking for the way." This is a trap so many of us fall headfirst into along the way. In a state of confusion, we tumble down into a foggy place where we stagnate.
Do You Know "The Waiting Place"?
The waiting place is, sadly, a place I know well. You see, I've stepped out in faith many times only to find myself dazed and confused when I have been met with the illusion of room after room of people just waiting. At first, I was undaunted and continued to follow my dreams and all that was alive inside my heart. But then I got lonely and began to cast off my truth. I started thinking maybe this passion I had for life was misguided. That all these people in the Waiting Place must be right. That I had to wait my turn. Wait for a sign. Wait for a sunny day. A wide berth. Applause. Welcome. Affirmation. Safety. Security. Etc., etc., etc., ad nauseum.
Is this picture coming clear? Over time, particularly when the people who had taught me most about life were constricting themselves and hung up in one waiting room or another, I began to dim my light and accept this as "just the way life is." I thought maybe I should wait, too. Wait for more clarity rather than take one more step in life's fog. Wait for a better window of opportunity. Wait for what I had to share to be more palatable to them. Wait for everyone else to be excited about LIFE and Living In Full Expression, too. Just wait...
This was the lie I told myself. Have you ever found yourself stuck in the perennial waiting place?
Theodor Seuss Geisel, aka Dr. Seuss, had this to say about "The Waiting Place" in his profoundly beautiful book Oh the Places You'll Go:
You can get so confused that you'll start in to race down long wiggled roads at a break-necking pace and grind on for miles cross weirdish wild space, headed, I fear, toward a most useless place. The Waiting Place... ...for people just waiting. Waiting for a train to go or a bus to come, or a plane to go or the mail to come, or the rain to go or the phone to ring, or the snow to snow or waiting around for a Yes or No or waiting for their hair to grow. Everyone is just waiting. Waiting for the fish to bite or waiting for wind to fly a kite or waiting around for Friday night or waiting, perhaps, for their Uncle Jake or a pot to boil, or a Better Break or a string of pearls, or a pair of pants or a wig with curls, or Another Chance.
Everyone is just waiting.
"No! That's not for you," Dr. Seuss writes. He goes on to paint the picture of you freed from such a trap and walking into the place "where boom bands are playing." Find the Dr. Seuss book here.
How I found a whole new way of freeing myself from the place where everyone is just waiting
In the Creative Revolutions credo I wrote for myself and my work in the world (I first wrote my Credo in 1999 and it's been connecting me to what matters most ever since! Learn to craft your credo here), I talked about the particular way I wanted to experience life and life to the full.
So, one day I realized that I must break free from the perennial "Waiting Place" and step forward in faith, even if it meant walking into the fray. Because that was the only way to BE who I was and had come to be as an explorer of life's way. It was the only thing to do if I was truly committed to a path of relentless authenticity and freedom in my life.
Freeing Yourself & Walking into the Fray
How do you free yourself from the malaise and malfunctioning quagmire of "The Waiting Place"?
It's different for every one of us, but let me share a bit about how I finally set myself free from waiting, just waiting. I was contemplating this when I painted my most recent Spirited Life painting, "Into October" from the Revelation Series.
It boils down to three little words x3 raised to the third.First, I remembered this: I know who I am, who you are, who we are together. I found it within me.
I am light. I am life I am love.Next, I woke up again to what I had known all along. Remember Dorothy? I know who I have come to be and, thanks to what I know and my credo, I am clear about the place from which I love to create and the essential truths that guide me and keep me connected to what matters most to me.
I love life. I love me. I love you.The third thing I remembered one day while twiddling my thumbs in the waiting place was this: I know how I want to walk in the way of my life—with courage and conviction, with a willingness to show up authentically no matter how many times I am knocked down, pushed aside, told I am too much, mocked or belittled. I know the value of these sacred seeds of essence within me, these seeds for life that hold the promise of a whole new way forward together, and I know the heart of what I have to share can support you to discover and share those fine gifts of original design only you can share. Because of this,
I'm not quitting. I'm not leaving. I'm not waiting.
No. More. Waiting.I'm not waiting for it to be easy, for God, Spirit, Life or any living, breathing thing to wave a magic wand and make the way appear I'm not waiting for the world to be ready and loving and accepting of who I am and who I have come to be, the unique way I am an interpreter of beauty and how I am wired to share creative offerings "from the soul for the soul" that are intended to connect you to your essential story of life. I'm not waiting for a time when I have everything I need to make it all go off without a hitch or come together seamlessly. It will be messy. I will be filled to the brim with meaning, movement, and momentum to support you. It will be me—100% true to the whole of who I am. Ready or not, here I AM.
Are you ready to fly free? What about you? Are you ready to get out of "the waiting place" and into the beautiful fray of your life? You've got to dare to take a single step.
