Her mind, they said, was always wandering. Or, as some would say, she had lost her mind. Her body too plump, and then too thin; her heart somewhere over there in some mountain far away. Her eyes, fixed on a horizon that could be anywhere. She was losing time, had lost her way, was broken, they said.
She seemed to float without fixed form or function, defying all the boxes built around her by all the voices of confusion. Perhaps they had a point. Perhaps she had lost her one glittering chance at something. But she knew who she was, that she was a free spirit, born to wander, to wonder, to witness. Within her she was rooted and growing golden.
In the circle, she waited for those who would deny her freedom, and their own, in favor of what they saw as belonging. They were all sailing on the same ship, fellow travelers on a common journey. Renewed by her daring, she stood unafraid, finding her way home.
“All that is gold does not glitter, Not all those who wander are lost; The old that is strong does not wither, Deep roots are not reached by the frost. From the ashes a fire shall be woken, A light from the shadows shall spring; Renewed shall be blade that was broken, The crownless again shall be king.” J.R.R. Tolkien, The Fellowship of the Ring
