Years passed in the forest but slowly she regained her strength. She began to speak a little each evening. Around the fire, sometimes they would laugh together, neither one of them remembering why. But that no longer mattered.
Then, a trip. She trusted him to take her back to the place where long ago she had taken the little box with the Teacher’s bones. It was too dangerous for them to remain where they were…
For now the Church, in league with the empire he had served so faithfully, had dispatched its armies to eradicate all trace of the truth that lived in her. Not to mention their wish to erase her. Too many knew of the place where she had walked so long ago, and she wanted to move the box of bones further to the interior. So they traveled south along the coast and, having recovered the small reliquary, made the turn north unnoticed in spite of the legions that lurked in the lonely land.
And there came a day on that journey, at Le Bousquet d’ Orb, in a river named for the world, near the village she loved named for the moon, that the sun rose upon them both. And there, in her river, on a happier day in mid Spring, it was as if theirs had not been a life marred by such unspeakable tragedy, but rather a happy celebration. That day, they swam with turtles and laughed like happy children in a dream.
This painting was inspired by several visits to the Orb River in France in 2016, by all my soul remembers, and by all things that come to life. During my time there, the soul of France reawakened me and connected me more deeply to my soul’s story and memories from a life long ago. All Soul of France paintings explore experiences, natural landscapes, and the history of this land that speaks to my heart.
