WE, ASLEEP IN THE MOUNTAIN — A Soul Story from Dawn
Leaving Ghost Ranch, I drove down a road that looked back on the mountains the great American painter Georgia O'Keeffe loved. They were alive with sleeping spirits singing a song of memory on the gusty New Mexico winds.
I had only some watercolor markers with me and Georgia seemed to be insisting that I make a quick painting of the scene. So, here's a quick study for "We, Asleep in the Mountain" and the spirited New Mexico mountains on my enchanted drive.
This acrylic painting by Dawn Richerson was painted after an enchanted drive in Abiquiu, New Mexico, not far from Ghost Ranch and the land that inspired Georgia O'Keeffe. It is from the Soul of America and Soul of Place collections.
As I continued down the road in the direction of Monastery of Christ in the Desert, I was awakened to how many times we walk in the same circles, going through the routine of our lives, and fail to miss all that is alive around us. In the mountains were a million faces.
So much was waiting there. It was no accident, perhaps, that when I rounded the curve that looked down on the Chama River and made it pass a dozen potholes that would have swallowed a somewhat smaller rental car whole, I would take a walk in the lonely desert and meet a friend along the way.
So much is possible when we are present to the day and dare to take an enchanted drive that will lead us who knows where. The story I had mused about had taken shape and form, and I was stepping out of the fixed mountain where we had lain asleep for eons now. In the heart of America, my soul found its first freedom. From sea to shining sea, I was met with simple moments and sweeping landscapes that came to life before my eyes.
