In the deepest part of the forest near Sainte-Baume in Provence, France, she wandered in search of herself and some way back. And always there was the one who followed close behind, bringing morsels of food and kindnesses.
In spite of her perpetual state of bewilderment and silence—was it a prayer or a sort of madness?—he stayed with her. There, in spirit with them, though for so long she could not see, was the great stag, a gentle guardian.
What is your essential story of life? What is alive in you?
This painting is inspired by my visit to the forests of Sainte-Baume in Provence, France, in 2016, and by all I know by heart. During my time there, the soul of France reawakened me and connected me more deeply to my soul’s story and memories from a life long ago. All Soul of France paintings explore experiences, natural landscapes, and the history of this land that speaks to my heart.
