THAT YOU MIGHT HAVE LIFE

Inspired by the Irish landscape near Clonmacnoise and the ancient stories brought to life there, this painting depicts a mysterious figure that is actually a group of three to the left of the Celtic cross. A massive cloud formation seems to signal the return of an ancient spirit, whose wisdom holds the key to resuscitate and revive those who have felt this life is but a river that has swallowed up their dreams.

In the bright blue summer skies, a feather floats. The scene conveyed something about the mix of a faith inspired by the roots of the monastic tradition as it existed alongside a strange gathering of other traditions, some tied to the Irish landscape and others from a time out of time and a place they were only beginning to remember.

A strange wind stirred that day at Clonmacnoise in the heart of the Emerald Isle. Just beyond the stone cross I saw shadows but not dark and grim at all. Rather they were beings bright and kind. Was there one? Or were there two—or even three?

The giant stone structure of the Celtic cross took her place and in the sky a feather cloud floated toward her. Spirits took the form of cloud and wafted down, as if asleep, lending their light and life to the ones who had believed in sacrifice.

When seen through the long lens of the ages, the millennia and the place beyond the machinations of the multiverse, the distortions became more clear. Yet, still, in the land steeped with religion there were also legends of the boat descending from the sky. And right there in the center of it all, a river of life!

It was the river, more than anything, that reminded me that day of how we are changed by stepping into the stream of our life. Immersed in the mystery of the holy moment, a new way forward was coming clear.
