Judas had left the table. Now Jesus was saying to his closest friends, "You'll look for me but will not find me. Where I am going, you cannot follow." Then he gave a new commandment: "Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”
Peter wanted the details. Where are you going, Lord? He wanted to come now. He said he would give his very life to follow. Jesus repeated, “Where I am going, you cannot follow now, but you will follow later.” When Peter insisted, Jesus told him before the sun came up even he, who said he would lay down his very life, would disown Jesus three times.
Jesus came to open up the way for all of us. He promised we would follow. Today is the beginning of Lent, a season of preparation. May we each be mindful of how we walk through it. This photo from the Rock of Dunamase in County Laois, Ireland, was a moment on the spectrum between a past that seemed so far away and a foreshadowing of a future that appeared a circling back and a going beyond what we had imagined possible.
What is your essential story of life? What is alive in you?
I hope this Faithscapes and Soul of Ireland Collection image has sparked a reconnection and remembrance for you today. I believe there is beauty to be found right here, right now, all around you and right there within you.
