She was old the last time she returned to the valley and made the climb. She had stood at the entrance to the cave, quietly tracing circles in the pooling water, considering all things lost. The scenes unfolded one after the other and she knew this would be the last goodbye; yet, she could not bring herself to say it.
As she turned from the purpling cave at sunset to make her way down through the soft valley, she saw before her a lavender light upon the fields. She turned one last time to see the sun sinking lower in the skies and the rolling hills—so like his stretched garment not long after the dove had descended. Soon she would be returned to the stars they loved to sit beneath.
She wondered whether he would be there, if she might find them all again in time. Only the last lingering notes of a broken song were left, fragments awash in this sea of love within her. Whatever came, she would walk on and one day she would meet him again to remember the song.
