RENNES VALLEY: SUNSET AND SHADOW
They had traversed many miles since the mountaintop treachery, and he had walked beside her, determined to see her safely home. She wanted to go further, to the turn in the river where she had left the boy, but the sun sank swiftly and he urged her to be with its beauty.
And so they stood in reverent admiration of a golden sun and all the love that rose up from the darkest of days. She did not tell him that day of the shadows she saw in the sky, though on the next and all the days that followed he would stand beside her, the river of blood forever uniting them but creating a chasm she never fully crossed in that life.
The golden sun disappeared and they became one with the mountain that night. And for that one moment, there were only stars and a blanket of peace that brought her comfort and joy. This painting is of the Rennes Valley, Aude, Languedoc, France, and is inspired by a soul memory that came clear to me in early December 2016 on my second visit to France.
It is one that continues to bring me deep peace.

During my time there, the soul of France reawakened me and connected me more deeply to my soul’s story and memories from a life long ago. All Soul of France paintings explore experiences, natural landscapes, and the history of this land that speaks to my heart.
ABOUT THE MAGDA SERIES. These are the stories that have lived in my heart and soul for the whole of my life. They are glimpses of one whom many remember and honor—the one known as Magdalen or Mary Magdalene. I call her Magda. Her story is alive in me and always leads me back to life and life to the full.
