ALL THE GREEN MOUNTAINS

He stood, a steadfast witness to the last angel’s trumpet sounding, looking up toward the grotto that had long been her home. This was where she would go to meet the Teacher. She had lived her life against incredible odds. She had survived so many attempts to take her from this life, to steal all she still remembered of the life before this life. She had survived so much and managed still to be at peace with life.

Most of all, she had come to be at peace with all the loss and, in time, come to see it as gain, seeing it all somehow gathered up and made into an offering and the enrichment of all things green and growing “in this land and in their hearts,” she said.She had stayed true to all she held within her heart. She had written many books and left them as little treasures. He wondered if anyone would ever find them.

But it was her story, their story, alive inside this mountain and on the forest floor that meant the most to him. He could read it in the crevices and caverns, the steep rocky face and especially in the soft smile she would show him when they would meet to talk at the close of day on his visits to these woods. He had been so happy for their talks and all that moved between them.

Who could say if the story would be remembered in a hundred years or ten thousand more? All he knew for sure that the living of it had changed him and that he would carry it for an eternity. It was written in his heart.

So long the angels had tended to her. Today they had come to take her home. They had carried her to the others who took her to the meeting place, in the town he now called home, and there they would bury her. But he knew it was life and life to the full that mattered to her, not death of where they laid her body to rest. For her spirit would be one with these green mountains and always in his heart.

That life she had spoken of would live in him always. It could not be contained. Rather it flowed swift as a the cool waters had that day they swam in the river. He knew this life would survive even his own death and transcend what time might try to take from them. He would find her again in time and they would walk into all the green mountains, breathing in the revelation of a mystery.

This painting is inspired by my visits to Sainte-Baume in Provence, France, in the spring and fall of 2016 and all that has come clear in time. This is what I know by heart. During my time there, the soul of France reawakened me and connected me more deeply to my soul’s story and memories from a life long ago. All Soul of France paintings explore experiences, natural landscapes, and the history of this land that speaks to my heart.

ABOUT THE MAGDA SERIES. These are the stories that have lived in my heart and soul for the whole of my life. They are glimpses of one whom many remember and honor—the one known as Magdalen or Mary Magdalene. I call her Magda. Her story is alive in me and always leads me back to life and life to the full.
